Counterfactual Causality from First Principles?

چکیده
In this position paper we discuss three main shortcomings of existing approaches to counterfactual causality from the computer science perspective, and sketch lines of work to try and overcome these issues: (1) causality definitions should be driven by a set of precisely specified requirements rather than specific examples; (2) causality frameworks should support system dynamics; (3) causality analysis should have a well-understood behavior in presence of abstraction.

Agent Morality via Counterfactuals in Logic Programming
This paper presents a computational model, via Logic Programming (LP), of counterfactual reasoning with applications to agent morality. Counterfactuals are conjectures about what would have happened, had an alternative event occurred. In the first part, we show how counterfactual reasoning, inspired by Pearl’s structural causal model of counterfactuals, is modeled using LP, by benefiting from L...
متن کاملReasoning with Cause and Effect
This paper summarizes concepts, principles, and tools that were found useful in applications involving causal modeling. The principles are based on structural-model semantics, in which functional (or counterfactual) relationships, representing autonomous physical processes are the fundamental building blocks. The paper presents the formal basis of this semantics, illustrates its application in ...
متن کاملA Sequent Calculus for Counterfactual Reasoning (CMU-CyLab-17-003)
Counterfactual conditions such as “if A were not true, then C would not have been true” have been formally studied by philosophers for causal claims for decades. Counterfactuals are often used informally in practice for diagnosing systems and identifying errors or misconfigurations. This paper develops a proof theory for counterfactual reasoning of Horn clauses, which have applications in domai...
متن کاملStatistics, Causality and Bell’s theorem
Bell’s (1964) theorem is popularly supposed to establish the non-locality of quantum physics as a mathematical-physical theory. Building from this, observed violation of Bell’s inequality in experiments such as that of Aspect and coworkers (1982) is popularly supposed to provide empirical proof of non-locality in the real world. This paper reviews recent work on Bell’s theorem, linking it to is...
متن کاملA principled approach to defining actual causation
In this paper we present a new proposal for defining actual causation, i.e., the problem of deciding if one event caused another. We do so within the popular counterfactual tradition initiated by Lewis, which is characterised by attributing a fundamental role to counterfactual dependence. Unlike the currently prominent definitions, our approach proceeds from the ground up: we start from basic p...
